It's been a while since I've seen one of these threads, and I finally have some work to show, so here we go! I decided not to use the Stew-Mac braces with the crappy X joint, and paid a visit to Ken Jones to cut up some red spruce brace stock. Came home with enough braces for my kit and 3 or 4 guitars after that too. Started gluing the braces down yesterday, heading back into the shop to finish up on the top after I post this. So what's going on in your shops this weekend? Looking forward to seeing what everybody else is working on! |

I've got my hands full -- left to right -- rim assemblies and backs for a Cuban Mahogany Jumbo Baritone, Amazon RW Odalisque (small body), Quilted Maple jumbo bari, and Tasmanian Tiger Myrtle Odalisque. Also a Padauk and Carolina Red Spruce bari.    Also my student, Gary's, Pau Ferro and Lutz GA is coming right along.  Ken Jones Mountain Song Guitars |

I wish I was building a guitar but still working on the new shop. I pulled the old scooter out today and cleaned it up to sell it. Here are a few shots of my new shop in progress as well as the scooter. I have someone interested in buying it so that will help the funds for my shop. Digging it out of the garage brings back some fond memories. It has been tucked away for the better part of 20 years now. I bought it when it was only 6 months old back in 1972 and drove it right into the shop and cut it in half and started chopping it up... The pic's of the inside of the shop you can see my brand new Laguna waiting for its new home. So yea, I wish I was building my next guitar but it will be worth the wait for a new shop. The old one was just too cramped. Bob |

Trying to come up with another Larson purfling pattern. Have cut a bunch of various 18" spindle blanks into veneers of various thicknesses and have been trying different combinations. LOTS of veneer, LOTS of glue, Lots of laminating...can be frustrating. Most all photos of Larson purfling are not close up enough and the purfling on old Larsons is all faded. Other than that it's spray booth, spray booth, spray booth... |

John Arnold and James Condino both agree its hard to beat prewar Martin's and Gibsons I have some very detailed tracings from John Arnold's collection and I'm just getting as close as I can to those. The Herringbone D-28 tracing is from a 1937 Heringbone D-28, the Nick Lucas is from a 1937 original Nick  My tops have a nice ring when thumped. I'll cut the sound hole before gluing the top on the rims. I have not felt the need to do any additional brace carving. |

Routed the pickguard and body to install a Joe Barden P-90 Soapbar in the neck position of the Tele. The cream color of the pickup kinda looks funny against the black singleply pickguard. The new pickup is LOUD and BOOMY compared to the stock unit, and my guess is the client will soon be shopping for a hotter bridge pickup to match the volume of the Barden. Drop-filling is the thing for this weekend, and starting to strip off all the siding on my house to start the re-siding process. We had a bad storm a little more than a month ago which backed up the gutters and ruined a couple of ceilings in the house, as well as ripping off some roof shingles. Thank God for insurance, because they are covering the new roof and water damage. But I have to prep the house for the roof by adding some stub facias and soffits to get the new gutters away from the outside walls. |

Nothing. At. All. My apprentice and I have been putting in huge hours since the Larrivee plant closed trying to get our biz off the ground. Last night was his bday, and we marked it well. I can't remember the last time I slept in til 4:30 pm. Ouch ouch ouch |
